The formation and usage of Chinese characters are known as 六书 or "Six writings" Liu Shu. There are six types of characters in the terms of their formation and usages: pictograph, indicatives, ideographs, phonetic compounds, mutual explanatory, and phonetic loans.

汉代学者把汉字的构成和使用方式归纳成六种类型,总称六书。
Hàndài xuézhě bǎ hànzì de gòuchéng hé shǐyòng fāngshì guīnà chéng liù zhǒng lèixíng, zǒngchēng liù shū.

六书指象形、指事、会意、形声、转注、假借。
Liù shū zhǐ xiàngxíng, zhǐ shì, huìyì, xíngshēng, zhuǎnzhù, jiǎjiè.
