Distance Learning Resources

In support of families affected by coronavirus-related school disruption, we're giving away free use of our language learning content worldwide.

We are sharing more learning materials:

It's been almost 3 weeks and trying out different educational ways and materials, I found that some distance learning materials are appropriate and some are not so. In this post, I would like to share my experience as a mother of one 7 and a half year old, second grader international school student.

If you've just began on distance learning for your child, I recommend the following:

Here you can learn leisurely, as a form of relaxation, as it can be very therapeutic to practice your writing. Writing Chinese characters is rather poetic because of how Chinese characters are formed. This section typically highlight the top 50 or more beautiful characters that are interesting for beginners before they fully indulge themselves into Chinese Language.

Some families are mixed marriages, for example one of their parents is from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia or even from America. Cantonese speaking friends with a Chinese heritage could have taught their children Cantonese by speaking with them on a day to day basis. Nowadays, it is just as important to make your Cantonese lessons fun, since you will be at home with them all the time, YES, its 24/7. Po Tim from Fortune Cookie Mom has prepared a lot of wonderful resources to share with you, to ride through this quarantine period. She is a mom of 4 and she's homeschooling all of them Cantonese!

Parents if during this difficult times, and you feel insecure that you might lose your job tomorrow, I recommend that you take action instead of fretting over it. The fact of the Global Recession makes it even more challenging to land a new job of similar salary and capacity as the unemployment rate is high worldwide for most sectors impacted by the coronavirus. Besides being a long haul that you must be mentally prepared for yourself and your loved ones, actions is more important than ever. Up-skill, improve yourself, take a course online. One important digital skillset is knowing how to use the 'Social Media' (this is almost an entry point) moving forward to sustain as more public health policies and social distancing measures are taken worldwide. The following e-course is good for social good or social services:

Social Media eLearning for Nonprofit Organization

Something entry level, an e-Course on Human Rights: UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities: KNOW WHAT ARE THE: Rights of Persons with a disability so that people with disabilities are able to participate equally in social life.

One mom reached out to say she would like to create a blog during this trying times. Here I share the six steps, if you need more email me nihaojodee@gmail.com, maybe I can help:

CREATE A BLOG:

How to Start a Blog in 6 Steps
  1. Pick a blog name. Choose something descriptive.
  2. Get your blog online. Register your blog and get hosting.
  3. Customise your blog. Choose a free template and tweak it.
  4. Write & publish your first post. The fun part!
  5. Promote your blog. Get more people to read your blog.
  6. Make money blogging.
In a nutshell these are the six steps. But I must tell you in blogging, there is a lot more! For example, here I quote:

“WORKING” DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN DOING WORK

Replying to emails, responding in Slack, checking things off the list, producing content, taking photos, writing posts, responding to comments…
All of that is work. And it’s important work.
But just because something doesn’t feel like work doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s not work.
For example, what if you spent tomorrow thinking through the way you create content and coming up with a new process that saves you an hour a day?
The process of thinking about work, or how you do work, is also work.

And this type of work can often times be much more beneficial in the long-run then the short term work that I mentioned above.

Here is a good evidence of the start and income reports of a food blogger who started from scratch. And I recommend you to read on, how the couple has made $32,000 [source: https://pinchofyum.com/june-traffic-income-report]

On History, this is Anne Frank's Diary by the Museum in the Netherlands, Amsterdam. Great way to inculcate historical events as part of your child's e-learning or distance learning during this trying times. For older children (age 8 and onwards) or if they can read English or understand Dutch. Good family watching educational content, to feel comforted that this trying times during the quarantine, we should be grateful, that we are in the comfort and warmth of our home, with a stocked up refrigerator of food, we can still be reading, listening to music or our favorite songs, watching Netflix, online contents, that we still can dance, exercise, do yoga, go cycling, go jogging.

On MATHEMATICS, this is quite a fun site for your child/children. You can set up games to play with your friends or you can drill for fun of exercising your kids addition, subtraction, multiplication and division:
