Chinese Song -

相声 also known as Crosstalk, is a traditional Chinese comedic performance in the form of a dialogue or a monologue or, even less frequently, a multi-player talk show. The language, rich in puns and allusions, is used in a rapid, bantering style.

Xiangsheng is one of China's foremost performing arts.

Today's featured person is 大山 Dàshān, literally "Big Mountain". 大山 is Mark Rowswell's Chinese stage name. He works as a freelance performer in People's Republic of China. Relatively unknown in the West, Dashan is perhaps the most famous Western performer in China, where he occupies a unique position as a foreign national who has become a bona fide domestic celebrity. Dashan's fame "is built on his now legendary ability to speak Mandarin Chinese better than many Chinese people."

孔子 - The Chinese Thinker

Confucius 孔夫子 (pinyin: Kǒng Fūzǐ) or "Master Kong" during the 551 BC – 479 BC was a Chinese thinker and social philosopher, whose teachings and philosophy have deeply influenced Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese and Vietnamese thought and life. His philosophy emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, justice and sincerity. These values gained prominence in China over other doctrines, such as Legalism (法家) or Taoism (道家) during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD). Confucius' thoughts have been developed into a system of philosophy known as Confucianism (儒家). In Europe, we know his name as "Confucius."

Laozi

According to Chinese tradition, Laozi 老子 (pinyin: Lǎozǐ) lived in the 6th century BC. Zi is an ancient affix carrying the meaning of "master." (Here it is relevant to note that all of the other ancient thinkers with this title--Confucius, Mozi, Hanfeizi, etc.--have it attached to their family names.)

As with most other ancient Chinese philosophers, Laozi often explains his ideas by way of paradox, analogy, appropriation of ancient sayings, repetition, symmetry, rhyme, and rhythm.
